St John’s College Boat Club, founded in 1910, is among one of the oldest boat clubs in Durham. Our boat house is located on our college site along the banks of the River Wear and we also have a well-equipped gym for land training. We welcome rowers and coxes of all athletic ability and experience to join our team!

We have strong men and women’s squads competing to a high level, with boats entering a variety of collegiate, regional and national competitions. This provides all students with the opportunity to participate in the sport in a way that compliments their studies.

Every year we have a very successful novice programme to teach those that are new to rowing. SJCBC offers the opportunity to learn to cox as well as row, and both novice coxes and rowers can get involved in the Novice Cup and Novice Head competitions at the start of the year in which we have had a history of success. These events also bring out the camaraderie and encouraging community spirit that this club is known for.

Off the water we have many social events which bring all rowers together – rowing at John’s will certainly be one of the highlights of your time at Durham. If you are a new student coming to Durham, we would love to welcome you to SJCBC in September!

The images below offer you a glimpse of what it is like to be a member of SJCBC! Please have a look at our “about” page for more information, and get in touch if you have any questions about rowing at John’s.
